Profiles of Nature episode, Rattlesnake Sanctuary

Georgian Bay is dotted with thousands of small islands, many of which present navigation hazards to large ships using the channels. Many of the islands have picturesque lighthouses on them. This one is on Brebuf Island.

There are a number of large rookeries for various types of birds on some of the more remote Georgian Bay Islands. Besides the seagulls that nested on this island, there was also a very active Black Crowned Night heron rookery. I felt sorry for these birds as they had to run the gauntlet of gulls whenever they brought food to their young.

The star of the program, an Eastern Massassauga Rattlesnake. Though quite venomous, the snake presents little danger to humans. They are shy retiring creatures that would much rather avoid confrontation. Still, getting this closeup was not the most comfortable of feelings.

These photos are video screen captures taken from a half hour episode of the series Profiles of Nature and Canadian Wilderness Journal.

They have aired on the Family Channel and Global TV.
They were produced by KEG in Toronto.
